Venice Student Honored and Businesses Get Noticed
News and notes for Wednesday, July 20, 2011.
A local high school incoming senior was awarded the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award this month. Daniel Sobajian received the $36,000 prize for his work raising thousands of dollars worth of school supplies for his fellow Venice High students. Five of the prizes are given annually to Jewish teenagers in California for demonstrating tikkun olam, Hebrew for "repairing the world," and leadership.
The awards are funded by the Helen Diller Family Foundation and given for teens to "further their college education or to further their work to make our world a better place." Congratulations, Daniel!
Because, you know, it's sunny out there, Daily Candy is featuring a Marina del Rey line of sunscreen that is sold in Hollywood and at The Detox Market on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Suntegrity Skincare offers face and body protection, as well as vitamin D supplements. Daily Candy says the facial lotion is "packed with antioxidants like red algae and astaxanthin, it also helps improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines." If you haven't stocked up on sunscreen yet this summer, it's never too late to start.
Urban Daddy has gotten wind of Secret Table's decision to give up its roving ways and settle down – right here in Venice. Dinner ($110) will be served at Big Red Sun, 560 Rose Ave., on Friday at 7 p.m. Foodies, rejoice!
Finally, Michael Anthony Mariscal, who is charged in the Penmar Park shooting last month, will go before a judge for a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning at 8:30, at the Airport Courthouse. The hearing will determine if there is enough evidence to go ahead with the prosecution.
