Cirque du Soleil performers returned to their roots today by taking to the streets in Santa Monica to showcase acrobatic feats and colorful costumes in a free performance.

The performers -- part of Cirque du Soleil's “Totem,” which runs through March 16 at the Santa Monica Pier -- were joined by Red Bull's BMX and
break dancers on the Third Street Promenade.

“Today we went in the streets, to where we come from, basically,” said Francis Jalbert, a spokesman for Cirque du Soleil. “Thirty years ago, that is where we started in the streets, so we wanted to come back here in the community and to offer this special performance.”

“Totem,” written and directed by Robert Lepage, traces the evolution of the human species and its desire to fly. The cast features 46 acrobats, actors, musicians and singers.

Tickets are available at www.cirquedusoleil.com/totem.
