Abbot Kinney Boulevard's Gentrification Pain

The area's renewal is attracting more high-end retailers, pushing out more local establishments.

Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard, named for the founder of Venice, Calif., maybe a victim of its own success, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The once-desolate area has turned into a hip spot, attracting posh shops and pushing out much of the mom-and-pop shops that give the area its charm to the consternation of longtime residents, according to the article.

“More and more every day, it feels like Abbot Kinney is separating itself from the neighborhood,” Marta Evry, a longtime resident, told the Times. “It’s a street for tourists, people from outside the area, but not a street for the people who live here.”
