Take a 3-Hour Tour of Venice, Get Subversive and Get Involved

Here are some of the things to do in Venice this week.

With summer still in full effect, and lots of visitors passing through Venice, we continue featuring local tours this week, with Venice Beach Walking Tours, the third in a series in this column.

a bike tour of Venice while this week is about one of the first walking tours (in recent history) of the Boardwalk by a local who's lived in Venice for over thirty years, Jeffrey Solomon. He knows many fascinating and funny tidbits about Venice, including stories about the various characters here.

Speaking of characters, Solomon is a character as well, injecting the tour with humourous anecdotes in a booming voice. "The Boardwalk," an in-depth, one-mile tour of Ocean Front Walk, run from Navy Street to Washington Boulevard. Solomon covers historic residences, (such as where Jim Morrison lived), Muscle Beach, and street performers as well as murals, cafes and underground speakeasies from the early days of Venice. There are two options, a three-hour tour ($40) and one that includes lunch at ($60). See the Venice Beach Walking Tours website for details.

on Wednesday at from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Some of the topics this week are reports on the noise abatement issue, outreach to schools, discussion of letter by Senator Ted Lieu to the Department of Toxic Substance Control. Anyone can stop by, so if you are affected by SMO, go make your voice be heard.

On Friday, the timely short, "" will screen at 212 Pier Ave. (name and address are the same), during Gerry Fialka's Subversive Cinema night. Filmmaker Lionel Hereia will present his documentary about the recent police killing of a homeless man in Fullerton. The evening gets started at 7:30 p.m. Two other documentary film shorts will be screened, including one with activist musicians Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Lenny Bruce and others, and a secret short featuring one of LA's biggest players.
