Video: DidiPop Demystifies Goblins Just in Time for Halloween

Mar Vista musician DidiPop's latest song for kids is called Goblins, and is a fun look at how goblins go about their daily lives.

Deborah Poppink – aka DidiPop – has a new song and video out in time for Halloween, simply called Goblins.

Asked by her publisher to write a Halloween song for a movie, Poppink came up with the Goblins song while she was visiting Big Sur for her stepson’s graduation. The musical inspiration for the piece came from Poppink’s love of the Pink Panther, Alfred Hitchcock, Peggy Lee’s song “Fever” and the television series, Get Smart.

Poppink told Patch she initially recorded the song for adults but the more she listened to it, “and the more I contemplated goblins (especially after my recent trip to Ireland with leprechauns and fairies all over the place), I realized that goblins are more meddlesome and tricky than evil.

“I like the fantasy of Halloween, but I have never been into scary movies or gore, so I wanted to make something for kids that would demystify goblins and Halloween and make it funny.”

What she came up with was a “behind the scenes look at goblins; where they live; what their mom might look like and what kind of cups they drink their hot cocoa out of.”

Poppink also sought inspiration from her two young daughters (who inspire many of her songs and often perform on her recordings).
“My girls love The Backyardigans and there is a grabbing goblin in one for the episodes so that was part of the inspiration for the chocolate grabbing guys [in the video],” Poppink explained. “They also love the Rainbow Fairy books, where goblins are a tad bit scary, but mostly comical and goofy.”
