MICHELE MIKESELL’S upcoming show, entitled "Hugo, Ok,” is an homage to a literal town established in 1901 in Southeast Oklahoma and is a return to her favorite subject: The Circus.

Because of the flat landscape, warm weather, and green grass, Hugo has remained a favorite spot in the US for traveling circuses to weather the winter months, since 1937. Dubbed "The Circus City,” Hugo is currently home to three nationally known circuses, including the last traveling three-ring, big top circus in the country.

Although these paintings are based on specific historic individuals, Mikesell continues to "...speak to the viewer on the subject of the universal human experience, and strives to create individuals and circumstances we can all relate to, and stories we're all interested in."

These paintings are the result of a collaborative project in which Mikesell worked closely with Los Angeles-based musicians Tom Farrell and Javier Orman of Dúo del Sol and was executed by sending sound clips and images of work-in-progress, back and forth, between Dallas and LA.

"Traditional visual art, including painting, cannot deny the influence of the digital age we live in.  Because of this 'global neighborhood', there is no longer a reason to subscribe to the idea of the Lone Hero Artist.  Collaboration, on some level, is the 21st century norm, thanks in part to technology,” says Mikesell.

This joint endeavor will culminate with a live sound & video performance illustrating the collaboration with Dúo del Sol at The Electric Lodge, in Venice Beach, immediately followed by the artist reception of new paintings at Altered Space Gallery, a short walk away, on Abbot Kinney Blvd.

In celebration of this event, Altered Space Gallery will be giving away a limited edition series of archival prints, each signed and numbered by the artist, to the shows first attendees.
