Bites Nearby: La Monarca Bakery

This authentic Mexican bakery offers a sweet array of freshly baked pan dulce and organic Oaxacan coffee.

I’m in heaven. Finally, a bakery where I can eat lunch and not feel guilty.

Savory items, such as Jalapeno Cheese Trenzas and Cazuelas with Poblano Chicken Mole, are offered, in addition to traditional Mexican sweet breads and pastries. Everything at La Monarca Bakery is made from scratch daily, without the use of preservatives or artificial ingredients. Using one-third less sugar in their recipes, keeps the focus on the flavors. Owner, Ricardo Cervantes, says that Mexican baked goods (pan dulce) are not as sweet as their American counterparts.

Mexico was heavily influenced by French cooking, which may explain why the croissants at La Monarca are so incredible – moist, melt-in-your-mouth goodness, filled with chocolate, fruit or Dulce de Leche (my favorite).

Deciding which treats to indulge in at La Monarca can be a challenge. The vast array of freshly baked breads, croissants, pastries, cakes and cookies is so inviting, you’ll want to try them all. Luckily, samples are available. I can never resist the Taquitos de Guava. Other pan dulce include Conchas (vanilla and chocolate seashells), Quequitos (cupcakes), Tres Leches cake and Mexican wedding cookies.

Organic coffee from Oaxaca, Mexico is the perfect complement to these goodies. One of the best espresso drinks I’ve ever had is the Café Oaxaca (espresso, Mexican hot chocolate and steamed milk). The chocolate is rich and not too sweet. I savor every sip and think about what delicious treat to bite into next.
