The Five Funkiest Shops in Venice

Venice Beach Hotels has compiled a list of the most eclectic, creative and artistic stores in town. Is your favorite here?

Fun, funky, quirky. All are synonymous with Venice. And now, Venice Beach Hotels has decided to compile what it believes are the five funkiest shops in the area. They are:

ME & Blue: The clothing boutique in a bungalow on Rose Avenue. VBH says, "This business is one with a very personal and organic feel, emerging out of a unique vision rather than a corporate meeting room somewhere far away…The 70s are a clear influence: the clothes are a little bit disco and a little bit hippie, ranging from gold lame dresses to beach tunics made from repurposed Indian saris."

Deus Ex Machina: P art motorcycle shop, part surf shop, part men’s boutique, part café, and part meeting space.  Says VBH, "No matter the product, the focus here is on craft. Items that aren’t created in-house are still a reflection of the California coast. The common thread of Pacific surf culture that all Deus’s locations share also runs through the collection. Though the wares aren’t exactly for those on a shoestring budget, there’s an emphasis on freedom that gives this business a backpacker ethos."

Mystic Journey : A new age bookstore, gift shop, and meeting space on Abbot Kinney. VBH describes the space as "cozy and inviting, with spots to sit and read. Among the shelves and tables of books, there’s Tibetan harmonic bowls, wind chimes, essential oils, jewelry, and huge geodes on display…This is a place that radiates with positivity: people feel better after spending a little time here. Some even deliberately visit when they know that they need to re-center.

Surfing Cowboys:  Furniture, art, surfboards and surf memorabilia. Technically no longer in Venice after having moved recently from Abbot Kinney to Mar Vista, the store still makes the list.  VBH states, "Full of mid-century modern furniture and art, the space feels like a large living room has merged with a gallery and a thrift store ."

Titanic: Hat emporium on Venice Boardwalk. "This is your place for high quality fedoras, driving hats, hand-woven straw hats, and an up-to-date hipster sensibility," says VBH.
