$2 Million Bike Center Set to Open on Friday

The City of Santa Monica in conjunction with Metro will open the largest bicycle facility of its kind in the United States in an effort to increase bike/transit connections to and from Santa Monica.

WHAT:
The City of Santa Monica, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), will celebrate the grand opening of the brand new, full-service “Santa Monica Bike Center,” the largest bicycle facility of its kind in the United States. The bike center’s two combined locations in the center of downtown Santa Monica feature 5,300 square-feet of space and nearly 360 secure bicycle parking spaces.  The facilities also provide bicycle rentals, showers, lockers, self-service repairs, vending and restrooms.  The Metro-funded project is expected to increase bike/transit connections for work and play to and from Santa Monica, a popular beachfront destination and bike-riding capital of Southern California.

Parking:  2-hour free parking is available in the Santa Monica Place Parking Structure. Media van parking will be available on 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue.

Large group of local cyclists will converge at Santa Monica City Hall lawn for a short bike ride to the bike center facility at 9:15 a.m.  Grand opening celebration will include ribbon-cutting and cake cutting.  Media will be given tours of the bike center facility, and can ride rental bikes and Segway scooters as part of the grand opening event.
