9th Circuit Judge Involved in Car Crash in Mar Vista

Judge Stephen Reinhardt suffered minor injuries Monday night when another driver attempted to run a red light at the intersection between Washington Place and Inglewood Boulevard.

Updated: (7:50 a.m.) Federal Judge Stephen Reinhardt was involved in a car accident around 9:30 p.m. Monday night, after another driver ran a red light and  hit his vehicle.

According to police, Reinhardt  - who sits on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals  - was driving westbound on Washington Place near the intersection with Inglewood Boulevard when a driver headed southbound on Inglewood tried to beat the light.

Officer Zachary Hutchings of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Division told Mar Vista Patch that Rescue Ambulance 53 arrived on the scene and treated Reinhardt for a visible injury to his left knee. However, Reinhardt declined to be taken to a hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured or arrested. "There was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident," Hutchings said.

Hutchings added that the cars invovled in the accident were a 2000 Honda and a 2004 Lexus, but declined to comment on which car Reinhardt was driving.

Reinhardt celebrated his 80th birthday on March 27 and was one of the three judges who that same-sex marriages could not be reinstated in California while the appeals process on whether Proposition 8 is unconstitutional is ongoing.
