A Gallery Farewell, a DUI Checkpoint and a Muscle Beach Competition: Labor Day Weekend in Venice

First Friday kicks off the long weekend.

Labor Day weekend kicks off with First Friday on Abbot Kinney.

Some of the key happenings you won't want to miss include the farewell party for Ten Women Gallery, as well as an art reception at the G2 Gallery.

G2 will be hosting a and his Nature L.A. exhibit. The reception will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with light hors d'oeuvres and live music.

On Saturday, expect the temperatures to creep back up to the low 70s and hot inland so expect crowds to hit the beach.

The usual events are in play, with lots of gallery shows. will be three Sicilian options, and there is art and poetry at .

Saturday night the LAPD will have a DUI checkpoint at Venice and Lincoln boulevards between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Take this as a reminder to take the bus, take a taxi or stay home! Labor Day is always a big travel weekend, as well as a big barbecue and drinking time, so please be safe.

The big event of the weekend comes Monday, with the annual Muscle Beach Championship. Registration is from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The competition starts at 10 a.m., and the finals will be at 1 p.m.
