News and notes for Thursday, June 16, 2011.

Happy Bloomsday!

Born out of James Joyce's acclaimed Ulysess, which takes place on June 16, 1904 in Dublin, Ireland, Bloomsday is an annual celebration of the book and Joyce's life.

You can turn this pseudo-holiday into a true celebration, with Imagine Ireland's guide to reliving events from the novel through places here in Venice. Check out the downloadable guide attached, which takes you from the to , evoking Dublin along the way. Take a moment and try to imagine that.

Of course, the third Thursday of the month also brings us the ! Check out to check out at the 10-month-old event.

We have exactly a month before the Venice Community BBQ on July 16, but yours truly has been tapped with finding judges for the BBQ, side dish and dessert challenges! Therefore, this announcement is twofold: First, if you 'que up an awesome piece of pork, or your strawberry-rhubarb meringue is the talk of the town, get ready to get competitive! Bring your tasty trifle to the potluck/BBQ and see how it stands up to your neighbors' dishes. Second, if you think you've got what it takes to be a judge, or know someone who does, shoot me an email with your nominee and how to reach him or her at samantha.page@patch.com. BBQ'ers, light your grills!

Finally, if you haven't seen it yet... actually, maybe don't bother. Politics-watchers are up in arms about a new campaign video released this week on You Tube titled, "Give Us Your Cash, B--tch." (Seriously.) A Craig Huey-supporting political action committee (PAC) called Right Turn USA posted the video, which is being called possibly the most racist and sexist campaign ad, ever. Hahn has already struck back, asking the Federal Election Commission to look into Huey's connection to the group.

Huey has condemned the ad, but another PAC which is connected to Huey has the same address as Right Turn USA. "I’m not a statistician, but I think I have a better chance of winning the Super Lotto Jackpot, than these two Pro-Huey political groups winding up in the exact same address by accident,” Dave Jacobson, Hahn for Congress campaign manager said in a statement.
