Books, Mardi Gras and Art: Just Another Weekend in Venice

Here are some things to keep you busy the second weekend of March, 2010.

Venice has been a-flutter with the idea of summer this week. After a few chilly evenings last week, we've been on a steady climb towards full-on beach weather. The forecast this weekend calls for highs at the top of the 60s and lows in the 50s at night.

On Friday, is celebrating the opening of "Arcane Seasons," with Bryan Pickens, Codak, Josh Hart and Skount. The reception will feature live painting by Van Saro and will run from 6 to 10 p.m.

"Leimert Park Wunderkind" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Admission is $7, students/seniors/children $5, members free.

On Saturday, don't miss the Venice library's spring book sale, which goes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Yes, Los Angeles voters opted to set more money aside for the library in coming budget cycles, but that doesn't mean the library doesn't need your help, now. Plus, you might score some awesome new reading material. (You can always donate your books to the library, as well).

While you're in the mood to browse, there is a on Saturday from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Get shoppin'! For causes!

Our very own little slice of New Orleans, family-run on Lincoln Boulevard is having a on Saturday afternoon, the 11th Annual Mardi Gras West. Stop by between 1 and 5 p.m. for some (awesome, zydeco) music, some (awesome, cajun) food, and the chance to support the Randal D. Simmons Outreach Foundation. It doesn't get better.

Saturday night, check out 's (admission is free) at The Talking Stick. The show starts at 7 p.m. and will feature Jude Johnstone and Harriet Schock.

If you've made it this far, and you're still looking for stuff to do this weekend, check out on Sunday morning from 10:30 to noon. The $12 class has live percussion, and all levels are welcome.
