Is December 21, 2012 the End of the World? Scholars, NASA Say No

Find out what the experts are saying about the Dec. 21, 2012, Doomsday prophesies, the end of the Mayan calendar and their potential impact on Bolingbrook.

Don’t make any rash decisions: Experts say 12/21/12 is going to be just another typical winter solstice.

Killer solar flares aren’t expected. Another planet isn’t on a collision course with ours. And the Mayan “long count calendar” ending on this date has no real significance – they had to end it somewhere!

What is All the Fuss About?

There are a number of theories and predictions that call for earth’s demise on Dec. 21, 2012. They include:

  • The ending of the Mayan calendar – The Mayans kept three separate calendars. The “long calendar” ends on Dec. 21. Some say this constitutes a Doomsday prediction; many do not.
  • Nostradamus – That famed French seer from the 1500s has been credited with predicting several end-of-the-world scenarios that some believe will take place in 2012. The website December212012.com points to the potential sparking of World War III on this date.
  • The collision of Earth and the supposed planet Nibiru – This supposed space catastrophe was initially predicted to strike in 2003. The planet in question was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to NASA. When the world didn’t end in 2003, the date was moved to December 2012 for the deadly collision with earth.

What are the Experts Saying?

The intrigue created by multiple end-of-the-world predictions has made many scholars and even NASA stand up to make statements debunking the claims. From professors at Tampa Bay’s own New College to the scientific minds at NASA, they’re all saying the same thing: Go ahead and pay that mortgage bill and wrap those holiday presents.

In regard to the ending of the Mayan calendar, New College’s Gabrielle Vail says this, according to Sarasota Patch:

There are many misconceptions about the Mayans. If you look at their calendar alone, the Mayans kept three calendars. The one that has prompted the end of the world predictions was their "long count calendar" — a 5,125 year calendar. The calendar began August 11, 3114 B.C. and ends Dec. 21, 2012.

She said the Mayans wrote about dates beyond Dec. 21, 2012 "well, well into the future, trillions of years." They also wrote about dates before the 5,125 year calendar began.

Here’s what NASA has to say about all of the collective Doomsday prophesies:

The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

What do you think? Is the world ending in a few days or are you making sure those bill payments go out on time? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

the NASA, MAYANS and NOSTRADAMUS are not God! They dont tell God what to do with His world! The world ends when God decides it ends...today, right now, tomorrow...whenever!!

Interesting concept that the world would end just because a calendar ran out of numbers! Why not?? Hell, just yesterday time stopped at my house because my watch stopped and my cat unplugged my clock! Get real people!!!

How do we know nasa isnt covering it up so the world doesnt go into panic?
Bry22 December 17, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I really feel the world will indeed end. Do you really think NASA would tell us? No because the wouldn't want to cause a panic. I'm worried I just hope the government is not keeping the truth from us we have a right to know if we are going to die. BFAZ

The world will not end on dec21/2012. As a muslim i believe there are still lot of things to come. May be something disasterous can happen on 21/12/2012, but will not end the world.

There is supposed to be an event in Biblical prophecy that wipes out one third of the world population and there is also a statement there would be an event that creates world panic and confusion and this is when the anti.christ rises to bring solutions that many follow from fear at first they think everything is well with him,but then his true evil is revealed ...you can read it yourself. I do wonder if we could have geographic trouble that doesn't wipe us out but could change life as we know it. I feel very calm though and I had a gift my whole life to sense danger ahead of time. Its true people are in question world wide so I guess we'll know in a few days I pray everyone will be alright and I pray you just don't worry be happy no matter what you believe or feel unsure of to believe.

I sit her reading everyone's comments and thoughts on this matter. Only one statement is true to every word...ONLY GOD himself will determine when and or how. This is mans doing. We will be the ones to destroy what God has given us. I'm a mother of 4 beautiful children. I give n provide love n I also punish them for their wrong doings. I know in my heart my heavily father will do no such thing. Just not yet...but it is already here. So love, live, n cherish what little time we do have. FAITH!

does it really matter that much to people when the world's going to end? when you could die next second, minutes or tomorrow etc ? Forget about when the world will end and Look around your surrounding and try and help out people who are in need would be a start! Make love and peace.

Why on earth are people referring to religion?? It has absolutely nothing to do with anything except that it is also a man made thing, which has only ever brought violence to mankind. What goes on in your minds will not decide if the earth goes or stays. We humans are real, we can be the only ones that can make a difference, help make the world a better place. There are heaps of other things that we could do to try and keep our planet alive, one thing that we cannot avoid or change is natural disasters. If something happens Friday think about helping as many people as possible.
pedram December 18, 2012 at 06:55 AM

ronnie December 18, 2012 at 07:02 AM
I don't think the world is going to end why would the good lord put all this here if he was just going to destroy it.
Tom Miskei December 18, 2012 at 09:35 AM
Omg once again with the gods lol... This has all to do with science and nature buddy. The natural balance of the earth may be out a bit according to Mayan theories and others, and there may be certain events such as flooding if the theories are correct. Pole shift theory, look it up. I'm not saying it will happen on a specific date as they make people believe, but there is good scientific evidence behind it all. It's not, what some people believe, going to explode, but I do believe that natural disasters will continue to occur, possibly more frequently.

Why not live the next few days as if the world was ending? It would be a hell of a time. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best. When it comes to such a serious event why not listen to the warning signs. Have a safe place in mind to go to, pack an emergency bag, food, water, gas.. If nothin happens then no big deal but you might as well be prepared just in case.
alisha December 19, 2012 at 08:53 PM
I don't know what to believe in all of this about the world ending on friday because I have heard lots of different things about it but we can't do anything about it if it happens than it happens but the only thing that scares me is that I am only 15 and I haven't lived my life properly yet so all I want to know is it going to end or is it another fake and people faking about the mayland calender as well because that's what has scared most people anyway hope for the best and not the worst

In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the merciful. The only owner and the only ruling judge of the day of recompense. U(ALLAh) alone we worship and u alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight the way of those whom u have bestowed ur grace, not the way of those ur anger or went astray.
bpkharel December 20, 2012 at 11:46 AM
12-21-2012 will not be different thanMay 2003.From above , it can benoted that it is the end of Mayan calender but not of the world.Neither anytheories nor any predictions are believable. But no one should forget that there is no fixed time for natural disaster to occur.... Just wait 24 hours and 20 minutes..
sureya December 20, 2012 at 10:16 PM
The worlds magnethosphere protects us from metiors and rouge planets its clearly impossible for it to end
