Know It Now: Happy Spring, Grand View Book Sale and Fire Response Times

Happy Spring! The vernal equinox occurred last night at 10:14 p.m. making Tuesday the first full day of spring. The equinox marks the moment when the sun is directly above the Earth's equator and the length of the day and night are nearly equal. t's the earliest occurrence of the spring equinox since 1896.


The National Weather Service is predicting weather fit for spring with sunny skies and a high of 64 expected today and pretty much the same for the next two days.

The Venice Neighborhood Council will meet Tuesday night and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky is scheduled to give a 10-minute presentation and field questions from the board and the public. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Westminster Elementary School auditorium, 1010 Abbot Kinney Boulevard. The complete agenda is right here.

Grand View Boulevard Elementary School in Mar Vista is holding a book sales this week at the school library from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., according to an email from the Grand View PTA.

Mayoral candidate Austin Beutner is weighing in on the debate over response times for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Beutner says it's taking far too long for firefighters to respond and politicians aren't providing solutions. He noted that firefighters respond to emergencies in less than 5 minutes only 38 percent of the time in Westchester, far below the national standard of 90 percent. For more details, go here.
