From downtown to the Valley to California politics, things are happening all over that affect Venice, plus an update on a would-be Abbot Kinney business.

1. If you missed the debate between Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown and Meg "Megzilla" Whitman last night, you can catch some of the highlights here. Or you can just listen to rundowns by the pundits, which will be flying fast and furious today.

2. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is reporting that this summer was LA's safest in decades. Neighborhoods that participated in the Summer Night Lights had a 40 percent decrease in gang-related crime and a 57 percent decrease in gang-related homicides this year from last.

3. Demolition has begun on the Skirball Center Drive bridge over the 405. Keep in mind if you're heading north that you should probably check this nice Twitter feed, or this website, which let you know the freeway closure schedule.
