Storm Moves In

Rain and high winds will prevail locally with snowfall in the mountains for several hours today.

A Pacific storm today will bring the Southland rain, high winds, snowfall and high surf, National Weather Service forecasters said.

The storm will produce between three and eight hours of moderate rain ending tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain totals are expected to range from a tenth of an inch to a half-inch over southern coastal and valley areas and between a half-inch and an inch across northern coastal and valley areas, according to an NWS advisory.

Snowfall is expected across the mountains of Ventura County this morning, spreading into Los Angeles County this afternoon, according to the NWS.

The snow level will generally range between 6,000 and 7,000 feet but drop to between 5,500 and 4,500 feet tonight and early Wednesday morning, which could have an impact on Interstate 5 near The Grapevine and Highway 33 near Pine Mountain Pass, NWS forecasters said. Between three and seven inches of snow is likely above 6,000 feet.

Along with the rain, it's expected that strong winds will sweep across the region, especially in the mountain areas, according to the NWS.

The NWS issued a wind advisory for the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, effective through noon today. Winds of between 20 and 30 miles per hour gusting to 60 mph were expected in mountain areas, according to the NWS,

A winter weather advisory, indicating that conditions will make travel difficult, will be in effect from noon today until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Along the Los Angeles County coast, very strong rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected today, NWS forecasters said, predicting surf of between two and four feet and sets of up to five feet this afternoon.

The NWS forecast highs today of 50 on Mount Wilson; 59 in Lancaster; 60 in Palmdale; 61 in Saugus; 63 in Avalon and Newport Beach; 64 in Burbank and Woodland Hills; 65 in Pasadena and San Gabriel; 66 at LAX, in downtown L.A and in Long Beach; and 67 in Anaheim. Highs tomorrow will be a few degrees higher.
