Welcome April with First Friday

Here are some of Venice's weekend offerings.

While we won't have the overwhelming warm weather of Thursday this weekend, Venice is still poised for activity over the next couple days, including celebrating April's First Friday.

As always, the first and best thing to hit on Friday is the . It's getting warmer, and tomatoes have re-entered the local food scene, along with the good fruits and veggies you love. But, read to the end of this post for all of Friday's action, since it can't possibly be contained in one day.

Friday night, Venice's art scene will be in full swing, with an opening at Altered Space, for ," and a reception at for award-winning conservation photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum and photographer and explorer J.J. L'Heureux. FYI, admission to G2's special events is now $5. A note from the owners on the gallery's website says, "The past few years have been challenging for many charitable organizations... We will donate 100% of the entry fee, along with all donations and proceeds from art sales, to the organizations with whom we partner." Not a bad deal, methinks.

Mystic Journey is also having an art opening with Adrien Ordorica, according to onabbotkinney.com, and they note that it's last night for the Arcane Seasons show.

If you're in the mood to get off Abbot Kinney on Friday night, will have reggae by Forbidden Fruit, and with have Java with Javelyn.

On Saturday, head over to Westminster Avenue Elementary for "" a tree-planting event at the WE Garden. Planting will happen from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Get dirty, have fun.

Saturday night, The G2 Gallery is hosting a silent auction fundraiser for The A.Skate Foundation, which helps autistic children be part of the social world through skating. The 1 in 91 event will go from 6 - 9 p.m. $10.

There will be no Much Love Animal Rescue on Abbot Kinney Boulevard this weekend or next. Pets of the Week will continue as scheduled, and you can always contact Much Love directly, through their website.

On Sunday, check out the Electric Lodge for "Daddy-O Dies Well," a new play directed and written by Murray Mednick. (The show, shown in the picture, opens Friday and will run weekends through April 22). $25, 8 p.m.

Or, if you missed it Friday and Saturday, stop by for the last day of their Riverby Estate wine tasting flight of three, and ease into the week. The Australian vineyards Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will be featured.
