The Mar Vista Community Council has invited the public, gardening enthusiasts and sustainability supporters to its free fourth annual Mar Vista Green Garden Showcase.
The April 21 showcase will feature more than 50 new gardens and more than 90 private resident gardens in Mar Vista will be on display, according to a release from the Mar Vista Community Council. The event last year had more than 2,000 visitors.
The garden showcase includes six self-guided walking and biking tours that will address sustainability in daily living, including composting techniques to water capture practices. Urban gardening also will be featured with gardens ranging from aquaponic farming to chicken coops.
There will be multiple guest presenters on the tour, including HoneyLove.org, which will explain why the urban beekeeping initiative is necessary. The Ballona Institute's Roy Van de Hoek will explain how residents can restore the Western bluebird and other local birds by hanging Blue Bird houses in trees and the Seed Library of Los Angeles will explain their seed library and campaign against genetically modified foods.
