Santa Monica City Officials to Meet with FAA in D.C.

Let's all hope for positive results.

Santa Monica City Officials are traveling to Washington D.C. to meet again with the FAA.

In an Information Item to Santa Monica City Council, Public Works Director Martin Pastucha and the Assistant to the City Manager Kate Vernez wrote that Santa Monica officials would be meeting with members of the FAA to talk about flight school operations and safety at the airport.

According to an article in the September 7, 2011 Santa Monica Daily Press, City officials to meet with FAA over flight schools, by Ashley Archibald, “City Manager Rod Gould wouldn't give exact topics for the trip or even the dates city representatives would fly out.”

Over the years, Santa Monica seems to have only managed to make SMO impacts on all the surrounding communities worse with the possible exception of Santa Monica. The point I am trying to arrive at is this. Why not collaborate with Los Angeles City officials when approaching FAA officials? The whole 250 degree takeoff procedure is a result of conflicting air space between SMO and LAX. Seems like a great opportunity to reach out to Los Angeles. I feel confident that Santa Monica residents would consider it a smart move. I know Los Angeles residents would approve.

I guess we’ll just have to hold our breath until we learn just what topics were discussed and what exactly was achieved.
