SMO Flight Schools Throw a Meatless Bone to Airport

Santa Monica Airport flight schools offer to reduce their nighttime activity, but don't go far enough.

In response to the Patch story:

The flight schools at Santa Monica Airport are only interested one thing; their bottom line profits.

They are now waving this meatless bone to the community because they are beginning to feel that the future of their businesses are under a real threat. I find it ironic that the flight schools use the term harmony in their letter to Santa Monica City officials(see attacnment).

Harmony is a musical term, and in no way can the constant repulsive noise from pattern flying be linked to harmony.

The fact is that a society that accepts such an unnecessary safety risk from pattern flying operations at an airport immediately surrounded with high-density populated neighborhoods is as guilty as those who are responsible for allowing it to begin with. Read the City of Santa Monica's press release (see the PDF to the right) regarding this flight school offer.

Clearly there are safety and public health concerns surrounding Santa Monica Airport. The “voluntary” offer by the flight schools is another reason why the acronym CRAAP is so appropriate.

Additionally: Although marketed as some sort of holiday gift to the communities from the six flight schools at SMO, this is a major insult to the airport’s neighbors. It amounts to a gift wrapped present that contains nothing of any substance. Who are they kidding? “Voluntary” is not even enforceable! What stands out from both the fight schools letter and the City of Santa Monica’s press release is the lack of any reference to the fact that there already exists tougher restrictions to pattern flying. (Touch and Go and Stop and Go operations are prohibited on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and during weekdays between one-half (1/2) hour after sunset and 7:00 a.m. of the following morning). The flight schools have circumvented the spirit and intent of this by using a maneuver called taxi-backs. The airport’s neighbors will not be fooled and should be outraged by this empty and insulting gesture, as noise from pattern flying will continue throughout the day, most of the evening, and weekends. If the six SMO flight schools wanted to do the right thing they would move to an appropriate airport not surrounded by residential communities. The flight schools need to move to another airport. We no longer want them using our neghborhood to practice their endless circling the skies above our houses- TIME TO CLOSE THE AIRPORT and RELOCATE THE SCHOOLS ! We are not fooled by this false promises -We are onto the politcial BS the airport and SM city council have been practising for years. They continue to turn their backs on the residents living the nightmare called the airport. If Santa Monica was truely concenred with being "Green" the airport would be CLOSED !
