Coalition Takes to Streets to Combat Underage Drinking

With St. Patrick's Day the third deadliest of the year for drunk-driving accidents, the Westside Impact Coalition passed out fliers with a goal of bringing that number down.

The Westside Impact Coalition, a community group dedicated to reducing underage and binge drinking in Santa Monica and Venice, took to the streets today to remind adults of their responsibilities not provide or permit minors alcohol at home parties on St. Patrick's Day.

Members passed out fliers in the North of Montana and Ocean Park neighborhoods that said: "It is your responsibility to designate an area and have a server check government-issued IDs if minors are present. ... PLEASE do your part to keep kids safe this holiday."

St. Patty's has become the third deadliest holiday in the nation, according to Sarah Blanch, project manager with the coalition. She cited statistics from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration on St. Patrick's Day alone, more than a third of fatalities from motor vehicle crashes -- 34 percent -- were connected to drunk driving

"It's crucial all Santa Monica residents throwing house parties do their part to protect minors from alcohol."
