Countywide DUI Crackdown Nabs 550 Over the Weekend

Extra DUI checkpoints are planned for Beverly Hills and other cities in the coming days.

A on drunken and drug-impaired motorists resulted in 550 arrests, authorities reported Monday.

The "Avoid the 100" campaign, which ran from Friday night through late Sunday, involved 100 deployments countywide. Last year during the same period, 663 DUI arrests were made, said Glendora police Officer Wendy Brewer, an Avoid coordinator.

The Avoid program is part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

In the coming days, extra DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are planned in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, South Pasadena, Long Beach, Whittier, Norwalk, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Bell Gardens, Inglewood and Torrance, among other locations.

The Avoid campaign will coincide with the California Highway Patrol's "Maximum Enforcement Period," which is set for Labor Day weekend. During the MEP, 80 percent of the CHP's officers hit the streets to nab intoxicated motorists, speeders and other traffic violators.

Let me clarify: All I tried to do was re-link to the video that was dumped when Patch revised itsRead More format. The Festival of the Chariots won't be coming to Venice for months.
