Four-Hour Manhunt Ends in Arrest of Possible Burglar

An area near the Venice pier is cordoned off by LAPD Thursday afternoon, resulting in the arrest of an 18-year-old man on suspicion of attempted burglary.

An 18-year-old man was booked on attempted burglary after leading LAPD on a four-hour manhunt near the Venice pier Thursday afternoon, police said.

The man was spotted shortly after noon peering over a fence on 29th Avenue by two officers, Pacific Division's Capt. Jon Peters said. When the cops tried to stop him, the suspect ran.

Peters said the police set up quickly, blocking off the area from 29th Avenue to Washington Boulevard, between Speedway and Pacific Avenue as residents and tourists listened to the drone of a helicopter up above.

"It's a lot of noise, but it's a really good tool," Peters said.

The suspect was eventually caught hiding in a trashcan, after K9 units tracked him down.

Peters said there have been several burglaries in the area this summer, and he cautioned people to keep their doors and windows locked. "These are crimes we could potentially be preventing," Peters said.

The suspect, who was unarmed, was booked on attempted burglary. It will be up to the district attorney's office whether or not to prosecute.

"They had some broken pottery and some pry marks in front of the house where he was seen by the officers," Pacific Division's Sgt. Felipe Vasquez told Patch.

"It's enough for us to book him," Vasquez said.
