LAPD Chief Wants Patrols at All LAUSD K-8 Schools Daily

Chief Charlie Beck says Sunday that he wants every kindergarten, elementary and middle school to get a visit from an LAPD officer each day.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Sunday he plans to ensure LAPD officers patrol all kindergarten, elementary and middle schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District each day.

Beck said it will require additional training and may require a combination of assignments and voluntary "adoptions," reported the KNBC4 Web site.

Beck said he hopes to have a plan in place by the time classes begin on Jan. 7 after winter break.

Beck said he would announce further details on Monday.

(Read our update about those details here.)

He also he had been talking with LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy and LAUSD police Chief Steven K. Zipperman about the logistics.

"I'm going to use all 10,000 LA police officers to make sure every K-5, every middle school in LA gets visited at least once a day by an LA police officer," Beck is quoted by KNBC as saying.

Beck's plan comes in reaction to Friday's mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 school children and six adults died.

r u NUTS? Putting high power ammo down range on a course is one thing, but cranking them off in an urban setting? Not only do you need to worry about a 2D background, you have to worry about a 3D now. How often will they practice? Who carries the liability? LAUSD? LAPD? The good fairy?

Yes, a CCW in the theater in CO would have been a great idea. Cops have approx a 33% hit rate (not kill rate) and practice monthlyl. How often are these CCW folks going to practice? Let's revisit the theater or any other public location you have listed - after accessing the threat, what is the next factor to consider? The BACKGROUND. In other words, what is behind your intended target? Unless you are callous enough to disregard the rights of those in the backgroond and reducing them to "collateral damage"......

Perhaps they should just install guard towers in every school yard. What a ridiculous waste of manpower and fear mongering.

I don't get it. Not at all. What's your first language? It's not English.

What understanding does it promote? Cops must not be busy enough if they have time for this.
