Venice Man Surrenders After Six-Hour Standoff with SWAT Team

The youth had locked himself in his bedroom and armed himself with a 9 mm pistol, police said.

Update: Nov. 23, 8:20 a.m.

A 22-year-old man who barricaded himself in his Venice home for six hours on Thanksgiving was taken for a mental health evaluation, according to a police sergeant.

No charges have been filed. The man surrendered without incident after police fired tear gas shells into the home in the 1200 block of Palms Boulevard, said Sgt. A. Doyen of the Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Station.

The man's father called officers to the home shortly after noon, saying his son had locked himself in his bedroom, possibly with a 9 mm handgun. Officers found weapons inside, Doyen said.

The man posted an update on his Facebook page claiming that he fired a gun in his house, according to police. Officers attempted to convince the man to leave his bedroom peacefully while streets in the neighborhood were barricaded and a number of neighbors were evacuated.

The man's name was withheld because he has not been booked for a crime and is under a mental health hold, Doyan said. The motive for the incident is unclear, and the incident remains under investigation.
