LAPD to Be on the Lookout for Drivers who Text

Four days this month, officers will be out in force, searching for those who can't go hands-free with their cell phones while driving.

LAPD officers will beef up efforts this month to find drivers who text and talk on their phones without hands-free devices. Patch file photo.

The Los Angeles Police Department will team with other agencies in a monthlong "zero tolerance" enforcement and education campaign designed to curb texting and operating hand-held cellphones while driving.

Special enforcement operations to cite cellphone violators will take place Thursday, April 8, April 17 and April 22.

The minimum ticket costs $161 with subsequent tickets going up to at least $281.

Studies show that texting while driving can delay a driver's reaction as severely as a legally drunken driver. It takes about 4.6 seconds to write and send a text, during which time a driver on a freeway will have traveled the distance of a football field.

All of you seem to be missing the point....IT'S ILLEGAL TO DRIVE AND/OR TEXT WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE. PERIOD. In 2008 it became illegal to drive a car and talk on a cell phone. In 2009 it became illegal to drive a car and text on a cell phone. Coel - It doesn't matter how courteous & conscience a driver you are, you're breaking the law. It doesn't matter if you're at a stop light either. You are operating a motor vehicle and texting...again...doing something illegal. Kristen/Coel - So in order for distracted driving to be stopped you're both asking for the phone to take the hit? In other words, you don't want to take responsibility for your own actions of using the phone while you're diving. You want somebody else to do it for you. How about grow up, take responsibility and do it yourself. That's kind of what happens when you become an adult. You take responsibility. Funny how that works. And as for the LAPD setting aside 4 days this month to enforce these laws, isn't this something they should be doing every single day? I mean...it is their job right? Or is this another one of those "victimless crimes" like prostitution where they KNOW it's going on, but can't really do anything about it (i.e. "meh...not interested").

REPEAL victimless crimes. If there's no one harmed as a result of my texting, or my drunken driving, then there should be no penalty.

It's not necessarily victimless. Here's one case we're following in OC. While it's not clear whether the driver was using the phone at the time, the prosecutors are alleging she was "completely inattentive." http://sanjuancapistrano.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/defendant-was-completely-inattentive-when-she-slammed-into-softball-coachs-car
Very hypocritical, considering Paul Krekorian used city funds a few years ago to develop a cell phone app to tell you whether parking is available in city parking structures without pulling into it first. You have to break the law in order to use it. HILARIOUS!! Now the city can make money from tickets the write for using an illegal app they developed. It is however the not quite deep thinking we have come to expect from our councilman I CAN NOT ARGEE WITH YOU MORE Arthur PAUL HAS DONE THOGH AS YOUR COUNCILMEN . HE DRIVES A CITY OWN TAXS PAYERS CAR AROUND ALL DAY. PAUL SAYS IT IS OK FOR THE TAX PAYERES TOL PAY FOR A ONE HUNDRED AND AND EIGHTY FIVE THOUNDS DOLLARS SETTLEM. HE MUST BE VOTE OUT OF OFFICE JUST A OTHER TWO FACE JERK THAT NEEDS TO GO.

What about Police Officers driving and talking on their cellphones? Again, Double Standards.
