Venice Boardwalk Rampage Suspect Charged With Murder, 33 Felony Counts

Nathan Louis Campbell has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of hit-and-run.

A 38-year-old Colorado man was charged Tuesday with murder and other counts after he allegedly drove his car into pedestrians walking on Venice’s Ocean Front Walk on Saturday, killing an Italian woman on her honeymoon.

Nathan Louis Campbell, 38, is charged with one count of murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of hit-and-run, said Head Deputy District Attorney Gary Hearnsberger with the Major Crimes Division. 

The complaint includes the special allegation of use of a deadly weapon, a car.

Campbell has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Deputy District Attorney Victor Avila, who is assigned to prosecute the case, will ask that Campbell’s bail be set at $1.48 million. Campbell will be arraigned Tuesday afternoon at the Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles.

Campbell allegedly drove his 2008 Dodge Avenger onto the popular Venice boardwalk shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday. Campbell allegedly drove on Dudley Avenue and sped south near Sunset Avenue, killing Alice Gruppioni, 32, of Italy, and hitting 16 others. Of the 16 injured victims, eight are female and eight are male.

Police said Campbell abandoned the vehicle at Ocean Park Boulevard and Beverly Avenue and turned himself into Santa Monica police about two hours later.

If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
