Proposition B Relating to Police Pensions Passes

The ballot measure will allow police who transfer from the Department of General Services into the Los Angeles police force to shift their retirement funds.

Voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved Proposition B, which ratified a pension-related change city leaders made last year.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, 58 percent of voters supported the measure.

Sworn officers who work for the city but were not part of the police force were absorbed into the Los Angeles Police Department as a cost-cutting move. Those officers, who are tasked with guarding and patrolling city property, facilities and buildings, now have the option to switch from their civilian pension plan to the public safety pension plan.

The City Council placed Proposition B on the ballot to seek voter approval to allow officers who switch to the public safety plan to purchase, at their own expense, retirement credit for the work they've already performed. The allowance cannot be made without approval from voters and the measure will not result in additional costs to the city, proponents said.

However, opponents had claimed that the city’s pension system is a major contributing factor in Los Angeles’ current debt and there would be no guarantee that the Proposition B wouldn’t in fact end up costing taxpayers.

What a freakin' idiot. Pensions are not tax free. The amount contributed by the employee may be a deduction, but once the employee retires and starts drawing their pension, they have to pay taxes.
R U sure you're not entirely jealous because you are only smart enough to only work at Walmart?

Dave,
I'm glad you're on our side. Compared to other Departments around the country, our pension contributions are minimal. On the year of our retirement we rack up as much overtime as we can stay awake for, and then our union sends us to their doctor. He declares us "disabled", and then we retire. FYI, most all of our pensions are "Tax Free". Disability Pensions are Tax Free, but thank you for your support.

Glad Prop."A"didn't pass, but Prop."B" was the Trojan Horse. A few years ago, I voted with the majority, and we let the airport cops join the LAPD retirement system. At least they were real cops. Have these "rent-a-cop" civilian security guards been upgraded to LAPD status, or has the LAPD been downgraded ? Obviously, this is payback for political favors owed. My question ? Why didn't the elected "Ruling Class" include the school crossing guards into the LAPD pension system ? We can all agree, the safety of our children is far more important than the enhanced pensions of these wannabee cops.

Paul (TAXMAN) Koruptz caught stealing on camera at city hall every time he raises your taxes and gives it to city busting union salaries and pensions. Prop A crashed and B didn't.
