California Coastal Commission Hearing on Venice Beach Parking Thursday

Venice residents and local organizations will attend the meeting in Long Beach to oppose paid parking districts and a midnight curfew at Venice Beach.

The California Coastal Commission will meet on Thurs. June 13 at 8:30 a.m. in Long Beach for a hearing – among other things – on a Los Angeles City proposal that would enact a series of future Overnight Parking Districts (OPDs) parking districts in Venice Beach and the current midnight curfew at Venice Beach.

The OPD’s would cover two distinct districts: the first would be the Venice area seaward of Lincoln Blvd., and would forbid parking from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. except for vehicles with district permits.

The second would cover the Marina del Rey area inland of Lincoln Blvd., which would forbid parking from 2 a.m. – 6 a.m. except for vehicles with district permits.

The proposal also includes the establishment of new Bicycle Share Program and bicycle lanes on segments of five existing streets, and the identification of 351 specific on-street parking spaces near the shoreline (including 285 metered spaces) where permits will not be required for parking. Overnight and/or early morning public parking will also be allowed (without permits) in six public parking lots operated by the City.

However, many locals are opposed to the proposal, saying it would severely restrict the public’s access to the beach. They will attend the hearing in protest. Among them will be The Surfrider Foundation, The Venice Action Alliance, Venice Community Unity Coalition, People United For Westside Renewal (POWER), Venice Community Housing Corporation, The Beyond Baroque Arts Center, SPARC, The Venice Beachhead newspaper and the Venice Skateboad Association.

Opponents with large "NOPDS IN VENICE" banners will be arriving in Long Beach at 8:15 am, for the hearing's start at 8:30am.

The Venice Beach parking permit item is #10(a) on the Commission’s agenda.

The hearing will take place at Long Beach City Council Chambers, 333 W. Ocean Blvd. Long Beach, 90802.
