County Invites Citizen Input on Voting System
The project aims to include residents in redesign through an online forum on voting modernization.
Officials reached out to the public today to help redesign the county's aging voting system.
Beginning today, anyone interested in the election process can weigh in by posting ideas at www.openideo.com/open/voting/brief.html.
In the initial "inspiration" phase of the project, participants are asked to share stories about their election experiences, their view of democracy and news and insights about the voting process.

In the next phase, which will begin in 20 days, participants will use those ideas to answer the question, "How might we design an accessible election experience for everyone?"
Later phases include feedback on concepts, refinements and a final evaluation. Winning concepts will be announced March 22.

The challenge is being conducted in partnership with the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation and is funded by a grant from the U.S. Elections Assistance Commission.
"Our goal is to generate innovative solutions that will improve the election experience for as many voters as possible regardless of age, ability or situation," said Daniel Castro, director of the ITIF initiative. "We are thrilled that L.A. County will be working with us to make sure all citizens can vote privately and independently. This is e-government at its finest."
The county is working to modernize its voting system and has been working with community groups to learn about voter needs and preferences. The project has been developed to engage the genius and talent of the best and brightest designers, academics and experts in various fields, as well as members of the broader community.
"As we look to the future of voting in Los Angeles County, we want to craft a vision that encompasses the diversity, creativity and desires of the community we serve," said Registrar-Recorder and County Clerk Dean Logan. "The online crowd-sourcing challenge is an exciting and innovative approach aimed at inviting broad participation in the ongoing discussion and design of our future voting system."
