Flash Poll: Romney Won Presidential Debate, CA Political Insiders Largely Agree

While the verdict in our Red and Blue California survey fell mostly along party lines, even Democrats found few good things to say about Obama’s showing.

California political insiders on both sides of the spectrum came away from Wednesday night’s presidential debate underwhelmed by President Obama’s performance, with two-thirds of respondents to a Patch survey saying Mitt Romney carried the evening.

Patch sent a quick, unscientific poll to our roster of Democratic and Republican party activists in the hours immediately following the debate; 24 Republicans and 15 Democrats responded.

Eighty-eight percent of Republicans said Romney had won the debate by a wide margin, while none dubbed Obama the winner.

“Romney was poised, calm and presidential,” one Republican said. “Obama was a deer in the headlights and looked scared.”

While 40 percent of Democratic respondents said Obama had won, a full third gave the victory to Romney, and the remaining 27 percent were neutral.

“Where was my President?! He was not present,” one Democrat lamented.

“The surge is to Romney,” said another.

Disappointment with the president’s performance didn’t stop Democrats from criticizing Romney’s lack of specific policy proposals on issues like healthcare and cutting the deficit.

“Romney doesn't even know the details of his plans. He'll find that out when he gets his marching orders from the Republican leadership when he meets with [them] after his inauguration,” a third Democrat quipped.

But Republican insiders disagreed, saying Romney was “in command” and “knew his facts and information.”

Ninety-two percent of Republicans said the debate would give a leg up to Romney’s campaign, which has struggled in recent weeks, while 60 percent of Democrats said the same of their candidate.

Respondents from both parties agreed that media pundits would crown Romney the victor.  And they found something else to agree upon, too:  the evening’s other loser.

“The loser in the debate was the moderator [PBS’s Jim Lehrer] who lost control of the format,” said one Republican, voicing an opinion also expressed by several Democrats. “However, that led to a better format of each candidate responding to the other’s statements in real time.”

The two candidates will meet again Oct. 16 in Hempstead, New York, where they’ll answer audience questions on foreign and domestic policy.

Who do you think dominated Wednesday’s debate? How do you think it will affect the election? Tell us in the comments.

The Red and Blue California Surveys

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in California. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions.

Patch will be conducting Red California and Blue California surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of Republicans and Democrats on the ground in California. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Sandra Oshiro.

Marcus, we were saved for a depression and never got there, but we were in the throes of a major recession.
bbkong October 11, 2012 at 06:39 pm
Whoever is doing that gets paid for it. Usually less than a penny a post. It's like collecting beer cans for scrap aluminum without actually pushing a shopping cart around.
Actually, they'd probably make more with the shopping cart, but they wouldn't be able to work in their underwear. Tough trade off there. Most modern forum software have filters for blocking that stuff but here it has to be sorted out by hand. Just an FYI.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:00 pm
Yeah, I'm thinking Patch IT should track the IP address and then block since the domain seems to be something individual and not big email.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:02 pm
Hey, Holly, I guess you deleted the post where you called JB a Misanthrope, because I've searched this thread backwards and forwards and cannot find it. In it, you lumped yourself with Margeaux. I'm just going to tell you the girl pitches it, so she has to be able to bat or catch, too. She doesn't get a pass due to friendship.
And to think, another debate tonight and we can start fresh on a new thread saying the same ole same ole.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:05 pm
Laughing at the term circlejerk, bbk. Speaking of Lyin' Ryan, have you heard his virginity claims about tonight? Why Biden has done this before, and this is his first time. Ok, Buckaroo, you just made the base case as to why you should not be elected.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:08 pm
Hannity?!? Hannity?!? Marcus, you're disturbing my lunch. Talk about a slime ball. Cannot stand the whiney little dude.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:13 pm
Thanks for the clarification about the neighbor notices, Steve. Yeah, I looked at all my settings and saw nothing that would trip it to work. I get surveys from the Patch periodically. Maybe I'll mention it.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:15 pm
Steve, Holly sometimes seems to have posters remorse and redacts comments she has made that get pushed out to the rest of us. So when you go to respond, it is no longer there. I had one of those this morning I couldn't find too.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:21 pm
See, ya'all should have left Big Bird alone. Riled up the whole Sesame Hood. Count busted Snuffy out of the joint, and Cookie is eating comments again. Last time I saw them, they were singing....wait for it...wait...here it comes, "Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?"
And sometimes, with the Conservative postings, when a Lib chimes in, I hear you guys singing, "One of these things is not like the others, one of these things is kinda the same...KILL IT BEFORE IT VOTES."
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:23 pm
Well, I won again. I got to the bottom of the comments, but it got awfully quiet. Where did they move the party. I will find you, LOL.
SteveB October 11, 2012 at 07:27 pm
You are right, it is missing. This was the post you were looking for:
No, jb, you weren't the first. However, you are the one who comes onto Patch and makes periodic stabs at a couple of folks on here. Your remarks to young Margeaux, who is female and most recently, me. The wall of anonymity provided by the internet allows a lot of people the opportunity to let their inner "bully" out and it seems you fit the mold. Too chicken to put your real name on, quick to name call and pass judgement, throw in inflammatory comments......color me immature if I wish but I think there are three terms that describe you. Bully, coward, and troll. Have a nice day, Mr. Misanthrope.
bbkong October 11, 2012 at 07:30 pm
That's a problem I don't have on my forum. I don't delete posts no matter what, but there's a 5 minute window to edit or delete your own. After that it's etched in stone. It's worked out pretty well since people are a lot more careful about what they say, spelling etc.
We haven't had a single poo fling in over 5 years of operation. Of course, that's not to say I don't enjoy a rowdy poo fling, but this place is hardly good for that with it's rules about coarse language, but hey, it's not my house.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:35 pm
Thanks, Steve. I mentioned same somewhere round the Patch. If you delete a comment, it doesn't mean it has gone to alphabet heaven. Someone well may have a copy of it.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 07:43 pm
Since it's quiet, this makes for an interesting read on Romney's foreign policy team. http://www.opednews.com/Quicklink/Ex-Powell-aide-on-Romney-s-in-General_News-121009-452.html I didn't read the full article, but Bolton is nutso so I'm not surprised.

IF you're into drinking games, here's one I found for tonight's debate.

I'm sure most of you saw the thing about googling 'completely wrong' in google images. Here's a report from Fox (yes, Fox) that exonerates the internet wackos from any subterfuges.

Holly Hale October 11, 2012 at 09:10 pm
Gayle, Listen, you know I can take it and dish it out. I deleted that comment and many others today. Yes, our postings might stay in some cyber mailbox but I'm quite finished with the bullying jb does. Glad to YOU, at least know the meaning of the word Gayle. Most people have to look it up. And I stand behind my opinion that the people who get the meanest are the ones who don't post their names.
Holly Hale October 11, 2012 at 09:27 pm
Tried to send you a personal message again but it didn't work, again!
Holly Hale October 11, 2012 at 09:34 pm
PS: Gayle, I know she writes like she's my friend. I've never met her. Have no clue what she looks like, even. At least she has a first name.......LOL
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 09:51 pm
Holly with the misanthrope thing I already said what I wanted to on that. If Margeaux dishes, she's gotta take, that's all.
I left a few minutes early having skipped lunch so I can watch the debate. It was rivering, not raining in LA. Be safe everyone.
Geo October 11, 2012 at 10:42 pm
Whoa, Gaylio...sis was defending herself from the blue meanie. Dude is ornery and I told you chix to not get your feathers ruffled but ya don't listen to ole Geo.
SteveB, It's some kinda weird twisted you savin' that chix posts. Like cyber stalking or something. Listenin' to the debate. Waste of airtime. Same story, different day.......... @Holly, Didya get the compliment up top? I hope so. Don't let those blue meanies getcha down, chic. Blue meanies, get it?
Jo October 11, 2012 at 11:29 pm
Whites would be called racist if 97 % of them voted for McCain, but yet it is ok that 97% of blacks voted for Obama. We need to encourage diversity, and by that I mean diversity of THOUGHT. Who gives a rats about skin color in this day and age? I am so sick of everything being about race, it is getting very old. Dividing our country by groups is bad for our country; we should think of ourselves as individuals, not white, black, men, women. We all have the same needs (full time jobs). Just 2 1/2 yrs ago 32 million people were on food stamps, now 47 million on food stamps -- these people will be permanently on the dole generation after generation with no stigma attached to receiving their next door neighbors' hard earned income. CA is a lost cause, they will likely vote for Obama. But look at Los Angeles that is on the verge of bankruptcy. LA has been run by Democrats for a long time. Mitch Englander is the only Republican on LA City Council; what can he do with 14 idiots. 97% of union dues go to Democrats so of course those Dems gave away huge pensions to the unions. I bring this up because CA is a lost cause, it will likely go Obama because there are idiot voters here...Ultra wealthy for whom high taxation doesn't change their lifestyles. Union members who just want to keep their huge pensions way out of whack with private sector pensions. And ultra poor who will be on the dole generation after generation...The rest of us are leaving CA as soon as we can.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 11:52 pm
It doesn't work for me and some of the others. How did you get yours to work, Holly? Was there anything you did in your settings?
Gayle M. Montgomery October 11, 2012 at 11:57 pm
Holly, there are tons of people I have met online and never in the flesh. Some of them, I feel quite close to, and I've picked up the phone to call one or more on occasion in times of travail, like when they've got bad weather in their area. In fact, i wind up worrying about more folks that way. No, Holly and I do not know one another. But after you go round and round for a while, you sorta kinda get to know folks. Maybe it's not the real them, maybe you're getting just a glimpse, but I sort of believe that that's the beauty of the web in that, if folks are being real, it's the type of communication where things like appearance and other detractors don't get away. I acknowledge you Holly because we've scrapped quite a bit and at least for now, the peace is much more desirable. Who knows when the next fur flying will begin, but we're neighbors in the long run. BTW Holly, do you have some singing videos on YouTube? I was looking for something and came across a serious of videos on YouTube done by Holly Hale. I'm not going to assume you're the only one in the world with that name. Are they yours?
Gayle M. Montgomery October 12, 2012 at 12:02 am
Yo, Geo, Baby, I wasn't jumping in Holly's stuff or even Margeaux's. I saw both sides of that tit for tat, and I'd say it was a draw. But what Holly did say was to sorta kinda defend Margeaux. Margeaux came to the Patch looking to get in the middle of a fight from the get go. She kept injecting little things to get into it with others, including things that were judgment driven without a lot of fact, and interjecting racism when there was none. My point is, if Margeaux is going to dish, she has to be able to receive. That's all.
Hey, anybody watching this show Last Resort on ABC? Really, really good stuff.
Gayle M. Montgomery October 12, 2012 at 12:08 am
Jo, did you just repeat your comments of 2 nights ago, or was this a computer glitch? It is identical to that what you posted on the 9th. Same identical rant. With respect to race, methinks though doth protest too much, and this sounds like threatened White folk talk, and before you go there, I'm White folk. It's very cavalier to disregard race because you flush all the socioeconomic issues that go with. You think discrimination doesn't take place and doesn't hold folks back, that the playing field is even? What fairy tale castle do you live in? I've seen this in action way too many times, folks trying to discriminate against the minority at look at me because I am White like I'm supposed to go along with it. Uh-uh. It's wrong. This rant was wrong when you did it the first time. I didn't call you out then because I was busy with other stuff and the Conservatives were having quite the bonfire. But repeating it a second time? Didn't get enough attention the first time, or are you just that cranked?
Gayle M. Montgomery October 12, 2012 at 12:09 am
And that part about leaving California...don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.
bbkong October 12, 2012 at 12:16 am
@Jo
I bet you're a lot of fun at parties.
Holly Hale October 12, 2012 at 01:05 am
There's a settings thing, Gayle. Where you check off if you want newsletters etc. I think it might enable the private message area. No, no posters remorse. I saw Geo's post about SteveB then I read up the list and saw he has copied and pasted me twice. Totally uncool. If I don't want to participate any longer in this "discussion" that's my choice. Not SteveB or anyone else. Thanks
Holly Hale October 12, 2012 at 02:36 pm
@Gayle: No, that's not me on YouTube. You can look at Monrovia First Pres. or Glendale College for choral presentations. What Geo was referring to was my singing the National Anthem to kick off a run then meet them at the end for the celebration. Today is Sifu Tony Horton's funeral and tomorrow the memorial. Sad days. Later.
