Lane Closures on Bundy Drive and Centinela Avenue Begin Today

LADWP is installing new power lines in West LA. Expect delays over the next three months.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power begins construction today on the next phase of  a new underground electrical transmission system in West Los Angeles.

Construction work will continue for approximately three months along Bundy Drive and Centinela Avenue, from just south of I-10 to the north side of Venice Boulevard. No street closures are anticipated; however, lane closures will occur at various times during the construction.

LADWP officials said the Scattergood-Olympic Transmission Line Project is needed to reinforce and increase electrical capacity of the existing transmission system, which is nearly 40 years old and critically undersized, and to strengthen the Westside’s connection to the power grid.

The 11.8 mile high-voltage line connects the Scattergood Generating Station in Playa del Rey to a substation (RS-K) in West Los Angeles. The entire project is expected to take approximately 2 ½ years.

Work on installing the line began last summer along Vista Del Mar Avenue in Playa Del Rey. While that work continues, LADWP contractors are set to begin the next phase, which involves excavating portions of Bundy Drive and Centinela Avenue between I-10 Freeway and the north side of Venice Boulevard. The 1.9-mile section is expected to be completed by March 25.

Under the approved traffic plan, various lanes will be closed between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. with at least one lane open in each direction throughout the project. Signage and other traffic controls will be in place where crews are working. Construction will take place Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The excavation work will involve installing conduit in trenches that are 3 feet wide and up to 12 feet deep, along with underground maintenance vaults every 1,500 to 2,500 feet. Additionally there will be improvements to the infrastructure connecting the cable at the generating station and the substation.
