Mar Vista Community Council Candidate: Michael Millman

Patch asked the Mar Vista candidates a few questions to help voters decide in the Oct. 28 election

Editor’s note: This is one of several articles in a series of profiles on Mar Vista candidates that Patch will be running leading up to the election.

What have you prioritized during your time and what will you focus on?

I have been a Director of MVNA for over 7 years.  I was the producer of the MVNA Annual Block Party wherein it estimate to be attended by over 300 Guest or more.

With the exception of the Garden Tour, this is the largest Mar Vista event wherein we have attracted all mayoral candidates and many other local politicians.  I helped produced the MVNA Newsletter.

Bill Rosendahl appointed me to his Special Committee on Housing.

I currently on the MVCC Board as Secretary and Co/Chair of the Land use and Planning Committee.

Who are your primary supporters?

I have Grass Roots Support from my neighbors because I have been available to them to advocate on their Issues. Now, I feel we need always provide support to police and fire because public safety is essential.  Now, my neighbors want less traffic and need to preserve the R 1 Zoning. Low Density is very Important to this community.

What issue do you feel most strongly about and what is your position?

I believe strongly development must be very responsible. Therefore, I would oppose sober living arrangements unless we set fair guidelines. Now, good friend Sherrie Akiers has some very excellent suggestions and I would follow her insight and judgment.

What's one thing most constituents don't know about you?

Most people do not know that my family is a housing provider.

Now here's a guy I would vote for if I lived in Mar Vista!

Michael is referring to the proposed community care ordinance which I am firmly and passionately against. As Co-Chair of the PLUM Committee he has proposed a workshop where speakers present both sides of the argument so that if MVCC presents a motion on this ordinance it will be fully informed of the feelings of the stakeholders that are represented. Equally important, we will do outreach as we do on all of our Green Committee motions to insure that the community knows about it. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Michael since he was appointed to the board this year - he works hard on our behalf and is willing to hear both sides on issues.

What are your thoughts on the future of the Santa Monica Airport? This is a major issue for many Mar VIsta and Venice residents. If you are indeed concerned about public safety the airport should be on your agenda?
