Meeting To Be Held on Proposed Power Rate Increase

The public will have a chance to ask questions on the proposed 10.6 percent hike.

The Mar Vista Community Council on Tuesday will hold an informative session about the proposed power and water rate increases.

Dr. Fred Pickel, ratepayer advocate for the Department of Water and Power, will give community members a 20 minute presentation before the Board of Water and Power Commission is expected to vote on the proposed rate increase on Wednesday.

“I felt there was a need for further public vetting on this extremely important issue,” said Councilman Bill Rosendahl in a statement. ”I felt it was essential that there be at least one public meeting for all Westside residents on the proposed power rate increase prior to any DWP Board action. The Ratepayer Advocate needs to provide an objective analysis and hear public testimony on how the rate increase will affect the lives of my constituents.”

The proposed 10.6 percent hike would be used to comply with legal mandates and invest in basic reliability. If approved, the power rate increase will go into effect in November, and the water increase in July 2013.

Dr. Pickel will be presenting to the Mar Vista Community Council Board of Directors at their meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mar Vista Recreation Center Auditorium, located at 11430 Woodbine Avenue, Los Angeles.
