Mystery Dust Covers Glendora Neighborhoods

What could be the source of a film of dust covering neighborhoods in Glendora?

Glendora residents awoke to an usual sight Wednesday morning – a layer of dust caked onto numerous cars, driveways and sidewalks.

Residents in various parts of Glendora, including Westridge Avenue, Mauna Loa, and N. Glendora Avenue reported the mystery ash.

The sight of the mystery dust blanketing cars and driveways of entire streets confused even longtime residents of Glendora.

Glendora Public Works received several reports from residents complaining about the dust, although city officials did not have an immediate explanation.

Director Dave Davies said South Coast Air Quality Management District is looking into the case.

Strong Santa Ana winds descended upon parts of Los Angeles County Wednesday morning, although the full force of the winds had little impact on the San Gabriel Valley, said Weather Specialist Bonnie Bartling.

Bartling said it was possible the mountain winds – peaking at 70 mph in some areas – may have pushed dust into the foothill region of the San Gabriel Valley, especially in areas where brush fires are common. However, AQMD has yet to confirm heavy winds as the source.

Did you find a layer of heavy dust in your neighborhood? What do you think could be the source of the mystery ash?

Yup, we had it too on Glendora/Virgina. It was more than just dust; sooty and sandy. Julie

Debbie Hughes, You mistake my incredulity for negativity. Also, the update report is in. It was dust and wind.

Appeared again this morning at our home in Glendora, January 17, 2013 and we had no wind last night or early this morning. So where is it coming from.

I'm commenting on behalf of a researcher in Japan who would like a sample of this dust you all have been finding. Packaging and postage expenses would be covered, or a third party could pick up the sample from you in person if you are ok with that. The sample will be sent to be independently analyzed and you will be notified of the results of the test. If any of you have a sample you can spare, please contact drtanuki@yahoo.com
