City Councilman Bill Rosendahl has thrown his support behind Democrat Torie Osborn in her campaign to represent the newly created .

“Torie is a fearless fighter for positive change, for social justice and for progressive values,” Rosendahl said in a press release issued Thursday morning. “She shares the concerns of her neighbors in this district and she will fight for what they want: a clean environment, quality education and health care, a strong safety net and job creation.”

“Having Bill Rosendahl’s support is critical to this campaign,” Osborn said in a statement. “Given his sheer popularity in the area, his endorsement is gold, and I consider it an absolute privilege to count him as one of my key supporters in this campaign.”

Osborn has been at the forefront of several nonprofit organizations, including the Liberty Hill Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, both of which are located in the new 50th Assembly District. She also served as a senior policy adviser on homelessness, poverty and economic development to Villaraigosa.

In a statement released by the mayor earlier this week, he said, “As a local leader who has worked on some of the most pressing issues of our time, from protecting our environment, to creating jobs, expanding access to better health care, helping the homeless and fighting for equality, Torie Osborn has proven herself to be a champion for those who need a voice. She has demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues that face her district and I know that she will be a strong representative for the residents of California’s 50th Assembly District.”

In the first six months of 2011, Osborn raised $215,000 for her campaign.
