Mar Vista in New Assembly District Following Release of New Redistricting Maps

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission releases a draft plan with new state electoral districts Friday.

After two years of work, the 14-member California Citizens Redistricting Commission released draft plans Friday for new congressional and state districts for the entire state.

The plans show new proposed boundaries for California's 53 congressional districts, 40 state Senate Districts and 80 state Assembly Districts, as well as districts for the state Board of Equalization, which handles taxation issues.

The boundaries are in the draft state now and there will be a public input process.  The final districts will be released in August.

The newly redrawn lines have some areas - such as Marina del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica in new congressional or state districts. While Mar Vista remains in the 36th Congressional District, it now moves from the 53rd to the 54th Assembly District, alongside Culver City.

The current 36th Congressional District, which Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice) represented until her resignation earlier this year, includes Mar Vista, Marina del Rey, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, El Segundo, Venice, Wilmington and San Pedro, among others.

The new Congressional district would still include Mar Vista, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance and Lomita, but not Marina del Rey or Venice. The Palos Verdes Peninsula and Santa Monica would be added, among other areas, and the Port of Los Angeles would no longer be included.
