Walgrove Elementary Students Meet State Sen. Ted Lieu and Tour the Capitol

Walgrove Elementary's fourth grade students had the opportunity to tour the capitol last week and meet with their .

Knowing that fourth grade students in California study state history and government, the kids' teacher, Lisa Laichtman, came up with the idea  for the trip last spring.

In an effort to let the children really see government in action, she began discussions with her class and their parents about how to raise the money for the trip. To cover the costs, the children and their families joined forces to hold lemonade stands, car washes, bake sales, a recycling drive and a craf fair with local vendors and artists.

Walgrove Elementary parent (and Mar Vista Patch contributer) Brooke Wirtschafter accompanied the class on the trip. She told Patch that several families came up with unique ideas to raise additional monies including making and selling taquitos  outside school for several weeks, selling flowers, and one family that owns a crepe restaurant brought their food truck to school and sold crepes.

The hard work paid off and the kids spent a day in the capitol on Wednesday. While some of the students were more excited about the actual flight to Sacramento, others came prepared with tough questions that even Lieu couldn't answer, including,  "Why is the state capitol in Sacramento?"
