Windward Grad Wesley Saunders Nets 18, Harvard Upsets New Mexico 68-62

Thursday night the sophomore was Harvard's top scorer with 62 percent shooting, snagged four rebounds and dished three assists in the Crimson's first-ever NCAA tournament win.

Windward High School graduate Wesley Saunders scored 18 points Thursday night to help 14th-seed Harvard upset 3rd-seed New Mexico 68-62 in Salt Lake City.

Windward is located at 11350 Palms Blvd. in Mar Vista, and Saunders graduated in 2011.

It was the upset of the day Thursday and now the Crimson move on to face 6th-seed Arizona at 3:10 p.m. Saturday March 23 in EnergySolutions Arena, the same venue for their historic victory over New Mexico.

Last year Harvard made its first NCAA appearance since 1946 and lost in the opening round 79-70 to Vanderbilt.

Saunders lettered in basketball and volleyball at Windward High, according to Harvard. He captained the basketball team his senior year and averaged 20.2 points and 10 rebounds per game that season. He helped Windward win the Division IV state basketball title and he was named to the Los Angeles Times 2011 All-Star team.

Harvard was established in 1636 and historians claim it is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.
