Cal-Hi Shows Venice Football Respect

The Gondos are just outside the Top 50 in the state preseason rankings.

Cal-Hi Sports has unveiled its preseason Top 50 prep football rankings and Venice High is one of several Los Angeles City Section schools on the "others strongly considered" list.

At No. 29, Carson is the only L.A. City team that begins the season in the Top 50, but defending section champion Crenshaw, Narbonne (which finished third in the Marine League last year) and defending Western League champion Venice are "bubble" teams that could move into the Top 50 if they win their season openers.

Coach Angelo Gasca guided the Gondoliers to an 8-5 record last fall, despite a 1-4 nonleague mark. in the semifinals of the City Division I playoffs.

Three teams on Venice's schedule this season are on the preseason Top 50 list: Bishop Amat, which plays the Gondoliers October 6, is the highest at No. 16, followed by Week 4 opponent La Mesa Helix at No. 19 and West Hills Chaminade (which hosts Venice September 9) at No. 39. Venice lost at home to Chaminade 37-30 and lost to Bishop Amat 42-20 in La Puente last season.

Defending state bowl Open Division champion Concord De La Salle tops the Cal-Hi poll, followed by Mission Viejo and Anaheim Servite--schools that met for the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division title last season.
