Supergirls 'Jam' on Venice Beach

The fifth annual competition features some of the best in the skate, surf, and snow world.

Sunday on Venice Beach, visitors were greeted with an odd sight: In summer weather, there was a two-story mound of snow for the Fifth Annual Supergirl Jam.  Athletes hailed from all over the Southland and as far away as the Czech Republic for the event, which also included skateboarding.

The competition was designed to boost the profile of women in action sports. More than 100 surfers, skateboarders and snowboarders participate in the series, which got started earlier this month in Oceanside with the Supergirl Pro Junior surf contest. It is "the action sports industry's largest all-female competition and lifestyle series," organizers said.

"Having snowboarding on the beach makes this such a cool event and so different from every contest out there," snowboarder Laurie Currier said in a statement. "The Supergirl contest takes everything I love and puts it into one amazing event."

X Games gold medalist Alexis Sablone thrilled the crowd at the Venice Skatepark, taking first place.

"This contest is really important. It gives the girls an opportunity to get exposure by focusing on just them," Sablone said in a statement. "It’s really cool. The course is always different and the beach provides a more relaxed atmosphere for a contest. I look forward to it every year."
