Venice High Baseball Bounces Back

The Gondos have won four games in four days at the Dennis Gilbert Tournament.

It was a slow week for sports, with students enjoying their time off for spring break. The softball, tennis, and swim teams had the week off, but the baseball and volleyball teams participated in tournaments to prepare for the final leg of play. Here’s a closer look:

Baseball

Coach and the varsity baseball team bounced back from a rough week in which it lost back-to-back league games to Westchester. The Gondoliers are on their most impressive run this spring, having won four games in four days at the Dennis Gilbert Easter Tournament heading into Saturday's afternoon game against Bell.

The Gondoliers were idle this week. They have a key rematch with league-leading Palisades at 3 p.m. Monday at Palisades High. Coach is hoping her squad will be more prepared this time than it was in the teams' previous meeting--a 14-3 loss on April 8.

“Last time we played them we really beat ourselves," Ruiz said. "I’m hoping that the girls have learned from the games since then, and I definitely expect this game to be a lot closer."

Volleyball

The boys team was out of town for spring break, as it took part in the Las Vegas Easter Invitational. The Gondoliers struggled in pool play, going 1-2. They lost to Coronado of Nevada and Fresno Bullard in straight sets, but were able to salvage a 2-1 win over Chula Vista Eastlake. Venice now prepares for the home stretch of the season, and Coach knows what’s at stake.

“I told the guys we need [to win] two of three to make the playoffs," he said. "Now one of those games is against Palisades, which is going to be very tough. So it starts with LACES. We have to win that game.”

The matchup with Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies is Monday afternoon at home, after the junior varsity match.

Tennis

The boys team was idle this week. It will travel to LACES on Monday, then head to Hamilton on Wednesday. Both league matches begin at 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, some players will travel to Ventura County for the .

Swimming and Diving

The Gondolier squads were idle this week but have a meet at LACES on Monday.

Meanwhile, over at ...

Both the baseball and softball teams are off until May. The Pirates' baseball team is trying to improve its playoff seeding while the softball squad plays its last game May 9 against Animo Robinson at South Park Recreation Center.
