Venice High Boys Perform at City Track Finals

The Gondos score in the 800 and 1,600 events; place 21st at Birmingham High.

The City Section Track & Field Championships were held Thursday afternoon at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa and Venice High finished 21st overall in the boys competition.

Junior Warsame Ahmed scored four points for the Gondoliers in the 1,600-meter race, finishing fourth in 4:22.47. Omar Cortez of Santee won in 4:17.96 and fellow senior Sean Padgett of El Camino Real was second in 4:18.71.

Another Venice junior, Carlos Flores, earned two points in the 800, finishing fifth in 1:58.82. Ahmed also ran the event but finished seventh in 1:59.06 and just missed scoring. Senior Mario Castillo of Woodland Hills Taft won the race in 1:56.25.

With six points, Venice tied for 21st with Jefferson, Southeast and Belmont. Several Western League rivals had strong meets. Fairfax was third in the boys, Palisades was fifth and Hamilton tied for 25th. More than 40 schools competed, although only 29 schools scored points.

In the girls meet, Palisades was third and University tied with Dorsey for 15th place.

Los Angeles Dorsey won the boys team title for the second straight year with 110 points and Carson won the girls competition with 93 points.
