Venice Squads Off to Fast Start

Softball plays twice this week and volleyball opens with Sylmar Thursday.

It’s the first week of March, meaning college basketball's March Madness is right around the corner. For high school, it means that spring sports are beginning and it's an exciting time at Venice High, as Gondolier teams have been winning early and often.

Baseball

The Gondoliers have started out on fire. Last week, they notched three victories, beating Hollywood, South Gate and King-Drew. Only a few weeks after the end of the basketball season, Keaton Frey has stepped right into baseball and had a team-high three RBI against King-Drew. Venice has outscored its opponents 24-7.

As Coach Walter Fujita predicted, pitching has been the key to his team's early success.

“Our pitching is better than it was last year," Fujita said. "We will be relying on that heavily throughout the season, especially when our bats aren’t doing well.”

This week, the Gondoliers look to continue their hot streak. They have only one game, Monday at Bell at 3 pm.

Softball

The softball team also started its season off with a win Saturday, and will have two more games this week before opening Western League play next week. On Monday the Gondoliers travel to Memorial Park to take on St. Monica at 3 p.m.  After that, they will host Jefferson on Saturday at 10:15 am.

Boys Volleyball

Unlike other spring sports, the boys volleyball team does not have much preparation before it starts Western League play. The Gondoliers open league next Monday at Fairfax, but have one match before that, hosting Sylmar on Thursday at 7 p.m. It will be the first opportunity for Coach Allen Hunt to try unveil his new lineup, as he shifted some players around.
