Venice Teams Face a Big Week Ahead

The Venice High baseball team has extra games coming, and the swim and dive team looks to prove themselves at an invitational.

All of the outdoor sports teams for Venice will be looking to shake off some rust after going a week without playing due to the rain of last week. For the indoor sports, this week is the biggest yet of the season for them.

Venice High

The baseball team was supposed to finally get their league season going last week, but had their back-to-back games with University postponed. As a result, coach Walter Fujita and his boys will be plenty busy this week, with three games in four days.

They will start off at home against Fairfax on Monday with the first pitch set for 3 p.m. Then the Gondos have a one-day break before hosting University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. to make up for the game last week and travelling to Fairfax on Thursday for a 3 p.m. game against the Lions.

“Its tough to be delayed on league because we build up league play to the kids. I think they are just eager to get on the field at this point. This week is a very big week for us,” said Fujita.

Just like the baseball team, the softball team is itching to get on the field as they haven’t played a game since March 16. They will get their chance Monday as they host a powerful Palisades team. This is their only game of the week so far, but a rescheduled game is very likely for later this week.

The boys volleyball team got a much-needed win last week when they defeated LACES 3-0. The team had been struggling, and needed the win to get some confidence going into their biggest game of the year so far, as they host league favorite Palisades on Monday. Coach Allen Hunt knows this is a big game for his team.

“This game will really show us where we stand. We will have to cut down on our ball handling mistakes, and play close to perfect to keep up with Palisades. I’m really looking forward to the test, and I hope that guys are too,” Hunt said.

After that game, the Gondos will then play host to Hamilton on Wednesday. Both games will start after the JV games, which begin at 2:30.

The boys tennis team hasn’t had much playing time recently due to the rain, but they have two home games coming up in the next three days. At 2:30 p.m. Monday they play Palisades, a team that Randy Chew thinks might be one of the best in the state. They will host Hamilton on Wednesday, again at 2:30. Chew is excited to finally have his top seven ready for this big week.

“This week is the first time that all of my top players will be out there. It’s great because I definitely feel that we have let a couple matches slip away due to our inexperience, so I can’t wait to have my best guys out there," Chew said.

The boys and girls swimming and diving team have a meet today against Hamilton as they prep for the biggest meet of the year, the Beverly Hills Invitational. Coach Sophie Sabbah says that some of the best teams in the city will be there, and it will be a great measure of her team’s abilities.

“In recent years we have been top 10 in the CIF, but I think this year we are good enough to be in the top 5. This invitational will be a way for me to see if that’s true. I’m very excited for our team to be put to the testm" Sabbah said.

The invitational will take place on Wednesday.

Animo Charter Venice

The Pirate baseball team is off to an impressive 4-1 record this year, and they will be looking to improve on that with two games this week. First they will travel to Garcia Park Rec Center to take on De La Hoya Animo. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday. Then on Wednesday, they will host Central City Value. That game is also scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Pirate softball team also has two games this week. First they will travel to Hellen Keller Park to face off with Animo South Los Angeles at 3 p.m. Monday. On Wednesday, they will welcome Middle College to Oakwood Rec Center for another 3 p.m. showdown.
