iPhone Maintenance

Despite their fine design and simplicity, even iPhones sometimes get slow and buggy. You don’t have to throw it across the room to fix it permanently, nor run to the Apple Store right away to demand a replacement. There are some easy troubleshooting steps that will most likely alleviate a lot of the inherent stress that comes with the bugs in the machine. Here are the two most common quicksteps that usually help do the trick:

  • Reboot the phone. Since there’s no on/off button on the iPhone, its easy to forget they’re mini computers too and need to be restarted every so often. To do what’s called a “hard reset,” hold down the power button in the top right corner for three seconds. You’ll be asked to swipe to confirm the shutdown, and after than the phone will shut itself down. Wait a minute, and then turn the phone back on by holding in the power button. The phone should be running a lot smoother right away.
  • Close apps. With the iPhone’s simple interface, its easy to forget how many apps you’ve opened over time since your last reboot. It’s always good to close the apps you’re not currently using. To do this, double tap the home button and click the “x” to close unused apps. If you have the newest iOS 7, just swipe up the desired app to close. It’ll be as if you’re throwing the app off the screen. Consider it closed.

It’s also a good thing to install software updates when they’re offered. Additionally, turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when you’re not using it, as this will help preserve battery life too. Same goes for turning down the brightness of your screen, this will help save battery juice too.  With a little iPhone maintenance you can help keep your phone running in tip top shape and stay happy about your hand-held computer.
