Girl Scout Cookies Returning With Something New

Cookie season starts this month, bringing with it a new flavor in honor of the scouting organization's 100th anniversary.

I bet you've been waiting all year for this—Girl Scout cookie season.

You won't be alone. The Girl Scouts of Americasold $760 million in cookies in 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Girl Scout cookie season runs from Jan. 20 to March 25. This year marks the Girl Scouts' 100th anniversary. To celebrate, the national organization has introduced a new flavor—Savannah Smiles, in honor of founder Juliette Gordon Low, a Savannah, GA local.

You can find cookies on smart phones with the free cookie locator app or on the girlscoutsla.org website.

Mar Vista scout leader, Gloria Halfacre says that those who want to support the girls but do not want to eat the cookies, the scouts offer the "Gift of Caring Program" that gives Girl Scout product customers a chance to purchase cookies as a donation to several charitable organizations (Operation Gratitude, the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank (and its Second Harvest Affiliates), the Bob Hope Hollywood USO (as well as the Ontario Airport and Palm Springs USO), Goodwill, and Blue Star Mothers).

Halfacre says, "the Cadette level of my Troop 925 have big goals. The girls are saving for a trip to Europe and need to raise almost $5,000 each over the next four years. Since the girls only make 75 cents a box, they have to sell about 6500 boxes of cookies each."

Local troops can be found at Costco/Albertsons on Washington, on Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4. They will also be at CVS on Venice and Vons on Centinela, and the Mar Vista Post Office on Grand View on different dates to be announced.
