Girl Scouts Do Good in the Local Community

Local troops team up to help needy families and children.

Have you ever wondered what Girl Scouts do when they’re not selling cookies?

Scouts in Mar Vista have been busy this holiday season working with other area troops to bring holiday cheer to people in need.

Local Girl Scout troops from Mar Vista, the Marina, Venice and Palms come together in the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) Marina Service Unit. In the last few months, the group, composed of 25 area Girl Scout Troops, have helped out at the Westside Annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner; they’ve made Christmas tree ornament for foster children and their families with the Teauge Foundation; collected five van loads of coats for a coat drive through the Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC), packed food for needy families with One Voice Los Angeles; and adopted a family through the Westside Children’s Center to shower with Christmas gifts.

Mar Vista resident, Gloria Halfacre, Co-Manager of the GSGLA Marina Service Unit says, “The Scouts learn how good it feels to give back to the community. They understand that it is not just the homeless that need help. It is families, families from our own community. They know that needy and hungry people are children, mothers, and fathers. It can be the neighbor next door or the child up the street.”

Says Halfacre, “I am very proud of all the different ways that Girl Scouts help our community.” She adds, “The girls inspire me every day.”
