L.A. City Council to Consider Sweeping Single-Use Bag Ban Wednesday

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday is set to consider a sweeping ban on single-use plastic and paper bags at convenience stores and supermarkets.

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday will consider a ban on single-use plastic and paper bags at convenience stores and supermarkets after blowing through its March 31 deadline to approve a bag ban. A plastic bag ban has been simmering at City Hall since 2004, when a task force was created to fight the amount of single-use plastic bags in the city's waterways. In 2008, the City Council adopted a policy statement with the goal of banning plastic carryout bags by January 2010. The move to ban single-use plastic bags stalled as the city hoped the state Legislature would approve a state-wide ban, but picked up steam again last fall. The city's Board of Public Works voted 4-0 in October to endorse the ban on single-use bags and the City …

The problem I see with this is that the reusable bag isn't the best alternative unless there's an incentive (ie. they cost $2). Because if they are cheap or free I can see people starting to treat reusable bags as if they were disposable and then our landfills and rivers will be full of more durable bags.   more ›

Venice High Gondos Repeat as City Golf Champions

Yamaguchi and Reyes lead Venice High to its third crown in four years.

The Venice High boys golf team won its second consecutive CIF Los Angeles City Section championship Monday afternoon with a five-player score of 380 on the par 72 Wilson Golf Course at Griffith Park. Paced by 1-under-par 71s from senior Clayton Yamaguchi, who finished second overall after a card-off, and junior Marc Reyes (fourth overall in a card-off), the Gondoliers captured their third City crown in four years and earned their fourth straight trip to the Southern California Regionals next Thursday at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. The team included five seniors: Yamaguchi, who tied for fifth at the state finals last spring and will continue his golf career at UC San Diego; Kevin Cullen, who will play for Saint Martin's University in…

L.A. City Councilman Rosendahl Reflects on Harvey Milk's Legacy

Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl has released a video reflecting on the legacy of the late Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public official in California.

Harvey Milk, the first openly gay public official in California, was born May 22, 1930, and became a martyr for the cause of gay rights upon his assassination in November 1978. Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, the first openly gay man elected to the Los Angeles City Council, reflected Tuesday on Milk's life and legacy in this video. Rosendahl's 11th District includes Venice, Mar Vista, Del Rey, Playa del Rey, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades.

Mountain Lion Shot in Downtown Santa Monica

Santa Monica Patch covers the latest on the mountain lion spotted earlier Tuesday.

A mountain lion that was spotted by a janitor in downtown Santa Monica has been shot and killed by authorities, Santa Monica Patch reports. Authorities cornered the 75-pound mountain lion in a courtyard near Second Street and tranquilized it. However, efforts to keep it contained in the courtyard, including fire department hoses and pepper balls were unsuccessful. "Regrettably, the officers had to euthanize the animal," Santa Monica Police Sgt. Robert Almada told Santa Monica Patch. The mountain lion's body is being taken to the California Wildlife Center in Calabasas, where it will be examined, according to Executive Director Cindy Reyes. Apparently it takes 15 minutes for the tranquilizer to work. One needs a lot of room for the animal to run until it hits. Of course the animal should be saved but they could not risk human life in a crowded urban situation. There is a childcare center, a church, yoga classes and lots of people in the area at that time. They tried to keep the cat at bay with fire hoses and paintball but it didn't …   more ›

Google Draws Large Crowd for Venice Family Clinic Fundraiser

Google opens its doors as the official sponsor of the Venice Art Walk & Auctions to benefit the Venice Family Clinic.

The two-day Venice Art Walk & Auctions to benefit the Venice Family Clinic – the largest free clinic in the country – featured a party and silent auction hosted by Google inside the Binoculars Building. Google, which moved offices from Santa Monica into Venice last year, opened its doors Sunday as the official sponsor of the fundraiser. The fundraiser also included weekend tours of artists in residence as well as architecture and home tours. The Venice Art Walk & Auctions recently has raised over $600,000 annually for the clinic. One of the tours included the studio and home of Huguette Caland, who was born in 1931 and is a Lebanese painter, sculptor and designer. Caland's home and studio was built in 1996 with an open design with the help…

Let's hope next year more people are aware of the changes to the Venice Art Walk. Google was a nice addition to the walk. I believe there were less people in attendance compared to prior years due to the changes. I have been volunteering for 14 years and never saw such poor attendance. We normally have double the amount of galleries to visit. I think the silent action should remain at the school…   more ›

L.A. City Council Approves Budget

The Los Angeles City Council approved the $7.2 billion budget that cuts significant services, but delays layoffs for 200 employees.

The Los Angeles City Council today approved a $7.2 billion budget that delays layoffs but makes close to $70 million in cuts to services and shrinks the city's workforce by more than 400 positions. The budget, first proposed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and amended by the council's Budget and Finance Committee, closes a $238 million deficit, but leaves next year's budget $199 million in the red. Councilman Bill Rosendahl, in a letter sent to Patch, pointed out that in addition to the cuts, there will be increased spending for tree trimming, more library hours, and re-surfacing up to 800 miles of city streets. "Our budget increases funding for summer youth jobs, restores money for cleaning our parks and public restrooms, creates a …

Four Car Wash Workers Sue for Unpaid Wages

Santa Monica Car Wash and Detailing and Millennium Car Wash in Venice accused of violating California's labor laws.

Four Los Angeles car washers sued their employers Monday seeking unpaid wages and restitution for time they allegedly worked off the clock, without overtime pay and without rest or meal breaks. The class action lawsuit was filed against the owners of three carwashes, including ones in Venice and Santa Monica, on behalf of "washeros" Esteban H. Carmona, Marcial H. Carmona, Anselmo Leyva and Pedro Cruz. "These three car washes denied the workers the wages they are entitled to," said Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund attorney Nicholas Espiritu. He said the businesses devised a "systemic practice designed to maximize the amount of work they get out of their workers while minimizing the pay that they get." Named in the lawsuit…

Thank you Jenna for this report. Abuse of workers anywhere and everywhere needs to be exposed. Some of it is hidden and it is not noticed for years. Perhaps now these workers will be treated with dignity, respect and a fair salary.   more ›

Groupon Good for Flight School, Bad for Neighbors?

Neighbors say online coupons for discounted flight lessons out of Santa Monica Airport put their safety at risk. The Airport Commission will hold a hearing about the ads.

In the past two months, a Santa Monica Airport flight school has sold more than 480 coupons for discounted pilot lessons. The success, however, has raised questions at City Hall about whether such promotions come at the detriment of airport neighbors. In its first Groupon ad, Justice Aviation enticed novice pilots with this language: "man the controls and try steep turns while flying over the Santa Monica Pier, Malibu Hills, and scenic landmarks." The attempt to grow the business nettled some residents who said Justice Aviation was putting their safety in the hands of adventure-seeking amateurs. So the second ad in May was phrased more delicately. The ability to take steep turns would be "far away from civilization and guided by the …

Enjoy your flight on weekend, although I hope you realize that you are adversely affecting thousands of residents living in the area with your noise and air pollution. Your joy is our torture. If your oldest wants to learn to fly, I hope he has the social conscience to fly in unpopulated areas. Although apparently he doesn't have to know how to fly in order to take the wheel on a Justice Aviation…   more ›
